Descriptive Paragraph

So you have just had 4 days away from school, Mr. M would like to know what you did.  Please write a Descriptive Paragraph explaining what you did, where you did it, and how it was all done!  Remember to start off with a good topic sentence, and build on your description with supporting details.  Don't forget to wrap it all up with a concluding sentence.

Daily Life

This week at school we will be reflecting upon that which we are thankful, we have opportunities that many did not have in the early 1600's.  Think about what your life is like now, and what would have been different at the first Thanksgiving celebration.  Please answer the following questions in preparation for your research today!

What would you have dressed in?
What types of food would you have eaten?
What sorts of games would you have played?
What sorts of chores would you have to do?
What things would you be learning at school?

Today I would like for you to compare & contrast what life was like for Pilgrim and Wampanoag children.  Take good notes and give me at least 3-5 facts (You could write more ) about each culture, how were they the same and how were they different?

Here at the Scholastic site you will find information about their clothing, housing, food, chores, schooling, and games that they would play.  You will be writing a letter as either a Pilgrim or a Wampanoag this week, be sure to write down as many details as you think are needed.  The more facts that you have, the better your essay will be later on this week!

Book Fair

This next week we have parent teacher conferences and the book fair will be here at school!  PTO has done a wonderful job decorating room 9south; they have a great selection of books.  There is a classroom wish list at the book fair and this year we are trying something new.  The scholastic book fair is now offering online shopping as well.

If for some reason you can't make it to the school to do a little shopping, you can do it online instead!  We even have a classroom wish list online (wink, wink).  This is a wonderful opportunity to encourage your progressing reader to become excited about reading.  For my students, what are some books on this page that you would love to see in our own classroom library?  Tell me in a comment and I will add them to the classroom wish list!

Goals

Now that you have begun your year as a 4th grader it's time to develop some personal goals. First, you have to understand what a goal is. In your own words, I want you to give me a "kid friendly" definition of what you think a goal is. Once you have defined it I want you to come up with 3-5 personal and academic goals that you would like to focus on this year.  You need to be specific with your goals and don't write things like, "I want to do better in Math."  That isn't a specific enough goal to work on. Be sure to leave your answer as a comment, to help I would first write your response into a Microsoft Word Document so you can check your spelling and grammar.

Door Decorations

Here are some pictures of doors that were around campus. I think that everyone did an outstanding job! No two doors are alike, turned out really nice all thanks to Mrs. O'Meara who helped organize it all. Thanks!

Read In Door Decoration

Here is what the kids put together for the love of reading door decorations. I think it turned out fabulous and makes me want to read all of the Harry Potter books again, great work kids!

Teddy Bear Picnic

Today our buddy class was nice enough to let us help out with their end of the unit celebration on bears. After we finished measuring the bears in inches we did a Venn diagram comparing two bears. After we finished all of our comparisons we feasted like bears ourselves, it was a blast and we would like to thank our buddy class for letting us join in on the fun!

Science Fair

The Science Fair is right around the corner.  Today the packets went home and the students Questions are due for review on this Friday (1.14.11).  While searching around the internet I noticed that Google has their very own Science Fair.  Poke around their site and see if you find anything interesting!

I have also found that Discovery Education is a wonderful resource to help find, organize and share your ideas for the Science Fair.  Do you have any other sites that you have used in the past or would like to share for future reference?

PE

Today we are goal setting and doing some mid year fitness testing.

Obama calls for national moment of silence for Tucson victims

On Saturday January 8th, 2011 Tucson was stuck by tragedy. A shooting occurred in front of a local grocery store that has changed the face of not just Arizona, but the entire nation. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot and remains in critical condition, sadly there are many who did not make it. Our class will be participating in a moment of silence to help support national unity in a time of great sadness. I encourage my students to share their thoughts about what has happend. There are many lives that have been effected by this event, no matter what it was a senseless tragedy that will stay with us for a long time.
